The living room is not only a family’s private sanctuary, but it’s also the space where you entertain guests. Choosing the right colour for the living room, then, is one of the most challenging tasks – it’s got to please everyone! Here are 5 factors that you must keep in mind when deciding which colour to go for.

1. The Ambience

Before choosing a colour, think of the ambience you would like to create. If you want to create an open and airy atmosphere, neutral colours are the perfect fit. Conversely, if you want a more cosy and private ambience, go for darker shades.

2. The Size of the Room

Another important thing to keep in mind is the size of the space. While light colours open up a room and make it seem larger, dark colours do just the opposite. So it’s always wise to paint smaller spaces with lighter colours, and larger ones with darker shades to make them more cosy.

3. Current Trends

While white is a timeless choice, currently muted colours such as light browns and soft greys are the talk of the town. They create a serene atmosphere and not to mention, ooze a lot of style!

4. Overall Room Theme

Your colour choices should complement the overall theme of the room. If your living room’s furniture and other elements (such as lights) are more traditional, then deep shades of elegant colours work the best. However, if your living room theme is more modern, neutral colours will work better.

5. The Colour of the Most Prominent Room Feature

It’s a great idea for the colour of the walls to compliment prominent furniture pieces or art. For example, if there is an art work that dominates your living room, pick out the colours from that piece, and toss it around on your walls!
